US Hwy 1 Bypass

There was a meeting regarding the potential for a US 1 Bypass in December at the Old Carthage Courthouse. The plan that was discussed would create a freeway around Southern Pines, through the Walther Moss Foundation property down through eastern Aberdeen and eventually join the four lane US 1 in Pinebluff. The courthouse was packed and several speakers were given time to speak. Pat Coughlin of the Moore County Chamber and Pat Corso of Partners in Progress both commented they thought it would have adverse effects for area businesses. Several other points of views were expressed, we’re just reporting what was heard from area business leaders.

At the end of the meeting, Councilman Cordell encouraged all concerned citizens to contact your area legislators if you had a particular point of view you wanted known. If you would like to email your congressmen and express your opinions, here is their contact information.

As mentioned in the email blast Tuesday, Francis Bisby of the NCDOT has welcomed participation in area meetings regarding long term transportation planning. You can monitor upcoming meetings and browse around at http://www.ncdot.gov/projects/moorechoices/ Ms Bisby said there were no defined plans regarding the US 1 Bypass, and there has to be municipal cooperation in any kind of proposal.
